‘With The Star of the Sea’ is the debut full length album from Brooklyn-based band Miguel and the Ocean Swell. The group is a musical collaboration between the Rinzel brothers (Mike and Mark) and New Jersey recording producer/engineer Alan Camlet. Written as a loose story, the record touches on themes such as the fall and return to grace, love, addiction, struggle and redemption. Packed into tight pop song structures, the recordings are awash with shimmering guitars, featuring recording artist Oscar Bautista and thick harmonies from the Rinzels and Camlet. There are also sections of orchestration throughout the record which were arranged and performed by Mazz Swift (Mazzmuse). The record should be experienced in order with each song serving a building block to the next.

The band’s lead singer and principle songwriter and guitarist is Mike Rinzel. Prior to a decade long musical hiatus, Rinzel performed and toured the East Coast as lead guitarist and songwriter for NYC-based group Poolsville coining the phrase “slop pop” to describe the band’s approach to sound. With his return to a musical creative life, Rinzel brings his 70’s era power-pop, harmony-infused style to the The Ocean Swell’s songs and recordings.

Mark Rinzel is the bassist and is the member of several groups that play original music in NYC (The Jupiter Deluxe, The Neutron Drivers) and is a regular in the Tribute circuit (New York’s Finest Police Tribute). Brothers Mike and Mark Rinzel have been making music together since they were kids where their first DYI punk release under the band name Establishment X made waves in suburban Maryland. Through the 90’s they were played in the NY “slop pop” group Poolsville. With the Ocean Swell Mark serves as one of the main song arrangers and provides the band’s signature harmonies and Stax style bass lines.

Studio owner and chief engineer Alan Camlet (Paul Collins Beat, NY’s Finest) joined the band as drummer, producer and song arranger in 2010. Camlet crafted the recording sound and is responsible for the overall quality of the record. Camlet’s longtime friend and musical partner Oscar Bautista (Gloria Estefan, Broadway hit American Idol) joined The Ocean Swell as lead guitarist adding a harder edged Americana rock sound to the group. New Orleans-based keyboardist Bill Malchow, violinist Mazz Swift and guitarist Pete Thompson have also recorded and performed with the band.
